OLIVE OIL TOURING IN ITALY
We have been taking clients olive oil touring in Tuscany and Sicily for many years. Both Italian regions are recognised for their delicious world class wines. However, those who have travelled in Italy do recognise the importance of olive oil not only in their cuisine, but in their culture too, they have been growing olive trees for over 3000yrs.
We can-
Organise a day tour and can also combine this with a winery tour and tasting
Have then owner host a guided walk through the olive groves
Visit the mill and tour the cold-press facility and see the original millstones used in the years gone by.
See how "cold-pressed" extra virgin olive oil is produced.
Enjoy a hosted tasting session
We can also include a traditional Tuscan or Sicilian Lunch
We visit year-round (harvest season is the best time usually September to November)
Olive oils flavour profiles are determined by the ground in which the trees are grown (terroir), and the olive varieties. Equally, the time of harvest has an impact on the taste with an early harvest in September or October as is quite common in Sicily, producing a fresh tasting oil.
So, olive trees in Tuscany mainly grow Moraiolo, Leccino and Frantoio olives, they produce that robust peppery and spicy style of oil that is often referred to as having a “green taste”
Sicilian oils tend to be milder but more complex with an aromatic and fruity profile. The most common olives grown are Cerasuola, Nocellara del Belice and Biancolilla. The oils differ by their regional profiles, particularly those in and around Mount Etna with its nutrient rich volcanic soil.
Both regions are beautiful and offer so much to the visitor and it’s a wonderful and unique experience so let us design and tailor an olive oil experience around your time in Italy.
